3rd February 2007 - So How Many Of 14 Songs Mixed Will Make The Album?

the classic 12

"We think that really long albums tend to be annoying... We're thinking of keeping it to 12. Whatever's left off will become b-sides.

Rick has been laying down drums for the last 2 days on 5 of the songs we demo-ed but didn't record. When we get round to it these will be finished and used as b-sides. Rick's doing these drums now so he won't have to fly back so often later on.

We have a lot of songs left over from previous albums that we're also thinking of finishing off to be used as b-sides. Music Factory." - Mark

2nd February 2007 - Guess The Album Title Hangman

I'll have a 'b' please Bob

Ash are not giving too much away at the moment concerning the new album title, but you can go to www.myspace.com/ash to play Guess the new Ash album title: Hangman style. To vote for which letter should be the first guess go to the New Official Ash Forum. Remember 'toti'. Ash have though confirmed that the logo used on the Higher Education Tour adverts will NOT be the logo used on the new album artwork.

There is also a mixing up on Ash's Myspace and on Tuesday after a long 2 day mix they finally nailed 'In Hell', it was some going but Ash really excited by how it's turned out. A brief snippet from the control room of the 6 and a half minute epic...

Below are the 14 tracks that Ash are mixing for the album, at least 11 of these will make the album and the others will appear as b-sides. Mixing of 10 of the 14 has been completed and these are shown in bold.

 - I Started A Fire (AKA Girl Who Can't Be Owned / Can't Be Owned)
 - Subterraneans (AKA Suicide Girls)
 - Shadows
 - Roulette (working title, AKA Keep It In)
 - Princess Six
 - Polaris (AKA Piano Song)
 - Dark and Stormy
 - You Can't Have It All
 - End Of The World
 - Blacklisted
 - Shattered Glass
 - Saskia
 - What Is The Meaning
 - In Hell (AKA The Boy Who Lived In Hell)

22nd January 2007 - Free Preview Coming Soon

darth says...

"Not long to wait now til an announcement on a free download preview track." - Mark

21st January 2007 - Mixing Update

ready for action

Plenty of updates about the album mixing. Firstly a new interview with Rick and also some news from Mark...

"So after a successful first week of mixing with Michael Brauer we're well underway and have 6 songs mixed and completed.

'I Started A Fire', 'Polaris', 'You Can't Have It All', 'Subterraneans' (AKA Suicide Girls), 'End Of The World' and 'Shattered Glass' are all finished and we're well happy with the results.

On Monday we'll be getting stuck into 'In Hell' which we're looking forward to, we wanna make this song blow peoples socks off!"

17th January 2007 - DMH On Michael Brauer Mixing The Album & More...

soon we're have it all

"We had inital reservations (Michael having mixed for Coldplay, Travis, The Kooks) but gave him a shot at doing one song before Christmas to see if it worked out. We're always in on the mix aswell so if we don't like the direction it's going in we have it changed. We wouldn't let Michael mix this album if he was gonna make it tame. The 3 tracks we've already mixed are sounding great. 'You Can't Have It All' was a difficult mix that took a long time but we nailed it last night around 1am and we're very happy with how it's turned out.

Truth is Michael really wants to get doing some 'rockier' stuff and see this album as a good chance to show he can.

Production wise deffo rawer than Meltdown which was prob too slick but hey that's what we were trying to do with it.

We've pulled out all the stops on a few songs which kinda suited it but there's also stuff we've wanted to keep more basic.

The album titles decided but the label want to hold off on announcing it until closer to release for press reasons." - Mark

16th January 2007 - Mixing Underway...

totally stoked!

Yesterday Ash began the mixing process in NY with Michael Brauer. Michael's mixed loads of massive records including Coldplay, Travis, The Kooks, Ben Folds and Idlewild. He's really into making Ash's album sound amazing and after the first 2 mixes; 'Polaris' and 'I Started A Fire' Ash are stoked with the results. Today 'You Can't Have It All' is being mixed.

'I Started A Fire' was previously known as 'Can't Be Owned' / 'The Girl Who Can't Be Owned'. It's set to be the album opener, it's pretty rocking and you'll be hearing it very soon.

15th January 2007 - Album '5.5'

recording done, mixing begins...

The album recording is now complete and the mixing starts today...

the boys who lived in hell

Studio video of the strings recording session!. "Just before the holidays Tim flew out to LA to oversee the recording of the string arrangements for the tracks 'Polaris' and 'The Boy Who Lived In Hell'.

Legendary composer Paul Buckmaster conducts the 20 piece orchestra in these videos that Tim recorded on his camera. Most of these are sections of the epic 'In Hell' during rehearsals, we don't want to give away the full track but you get a good sneak peak into how it's sounding. We also don't wanna give away too much of the theme to 'Polaris' just yet so there's one short clip of it being recorded from the control room." - Mark

8th December 2006 - Press Pics Photo Session Extravaganza!

making noise since 1977

"The last week's been pretty crazy as the wheels have begun turning on set up work for the new album's promotion.

We each got a fistfull of dollars from our lovely friends Alan and Nadine at Warners and we went out shopping for new clobber so that we don't look like tramps!

Our friend Karen helped out with sorting us out with clothing deals and basically waving a magic wand over us which really got us looking like a band and tied us all together.

Irish photographer B+ came to town with the ultra cool EC to take pics and we spent 2 full days with 7am starts taking pics at locations all over NYC and in the studio. B+ must have shot 100's of rolls of film (none of that digital crap!) so we're looking forward to seeing the results. The new pics will be posted as soon as they're all approved, obviously not all at once! Some may be used in artwork etc, etc...

We're also hoping to secure the rights to using some very cool artwork for the album cover." - Ash

Tim is being filmed today at the studio in NYC by BBC N. Ireland for a documentary on the history of Northern Irish music. Long term friend of the band Stuart Bailie of ATL is conducting the interview. Hopefully it won't be too long before the programme is aired on TV.

They're going to be running a news feature in the next few weeks so remember to check the shelves. Photographer Dave Willis took some pics of Tim and Mark on the rooftop of our studio building which looked amazing. (Rick was home in Scotland...) Hopefully they'll see print. We also signed some copies of the US version of Meltdown (with bonus DVD) and gaves them some T-shirts which they're gonna run as a competition.

13th September 2006 - Mark On The Return To New York Gig

"We were going to record it but Lance our sound guy forgot to press record. Doh! We do have a bunch of pics that'll go up on-line once we've sorted through them. The show went great, Rick talks about it here." Picture from gig.

"We tried out 6 of the usual setlist tracks to show that it ain't a problem reverting back to 3 live. Obviously we're missing backing vocals at the moment but we're thinking of ways round that. Rick might even take some vocal lessons to see if he can do it. For me it's near impossible, if i open my month the hand stops moving and the bass stops. I guess it's like rubbing your belly and patting your head. Some people can't do it... Tav and Strangey (our Agent) both said they didn't miss the other guitar. We were pretty anxious before hand but once we got going it was great. The small crowd, seemed to have a great time and it was a pretty great atmosphere. We played 2 new ones, "What Is The Meaning?" and "Roulette" (formerly "Keep It In"). It was good playing the new stuff.

It was a huge weight off our shoulders and we're looking forward to playing again soon.

We're gonna announce another 'party' show very soon. It'll be in NYC again as that's were we're recording / living. We'll be back in the UK and Ireland in the Spring."

24th May 2006 - The Demos

Mark has said descriptions of the new demos will follow soon, but not just yet, as demo's can drasticallly change once they record them for real but he'll give a brief sypnosis soon.

And though the current Ash vibe is of a rock 3 piece, Mark doesn't reckon the album will be as heavy as Meltdown, nothing as heavy as Clones or Detonator as of yet.

23rd May 2006 - From the Studio

"All the gear has arrived in New York for the start of recording in a few weeks. Some wiring work still has to be done but once that's completed we'll be ready to rock!"

      The demo's working titles:

1. Wasted on You
2. Princess Six
3. Suicide Girls - "has got a big pop chorus and is more like classic early Ash" - Mark,
"I think 'Suicide Girls' has the classic Ash formula about it. It's very much straight-ahead pop with a blazing Thin Lizzy-esque guitar solo in the middle" - Rick
4. Lay Down Your Arms
5. Rope Dancer
6. Roulette - formerly 'Keep It In'
7. Shadows
8. Piano Song - "one of them is one we'd be thinking could be a single. At the minute it's just called 'Piano Song' - but the lyrics and the vocals on it are really good. It's the one that Tim wrote on Bono's piano when he was having a holiday in France." - Mark
9. Hospital
10. Saskia - "There's a song called Saskia which we wanted to have a cold, East European kind of feel. So we were listening to a lot of the Bowie records that he did with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti. We really like a lot of his drum sounds from that time. And Iggy Pop's The Idiot too." - Tim
11. You Can't Have It All
12. What Is The Meaning
13. Dead Fairy
14. Wish You Were Dead
15. A Little High
16. Thin Air
17. Obsolete
18. Come On Over
19. Can't Be Owned
20. New Tattoo
21. Running Away Again
22. Carlos D
23. Dark and Stormy
24. Shattered Glass - "pretty full-on rock drumming with like weird, dark guitar - it's quite different" - Mark,
"really weird song that Tim had on an acoustic guitar which he thought was just gonna be a B-side. But me and Mark heard it and decided it was pretty damn cool, so we started playing around with it and turned into a bit of a monster. It's like a five minute epic. The closest thing would probably be 'Clones', but I think this is more anthemic than that." - Rick
25. End of the World
26. Kill Your Friends
27. In Hell
